Diet Fitness Questions and Answers

What are some things I can do to get the most out of my weight training?

I've lost about 20 pounds with cardio and I want to start using the weight room at the gym. I'd like to know what I can do (how many reps, number of sets and how many exercises for each muscle group) to get the most out of my workout at a beginner's level. How do I know what weight I should start out with? When do I know when I should increase the weight? Should I get a trainer to help me out in the beginning? Thanks.
Answers: For starters, what results are you looking for?

Muscle tone/definition?
Building muscle mass and bulk?
Endurance?

If you are a beginner a trainer or work out partner with knowledge about the subject is the way to go. Let the trainer or partner know what results you are looking for and they will be able to not only show you the exercises to do with sets, repetitions, and weight, they will also be able to put a routine together for you.

In general:

lower weights and about 5 to 10 sets / 10 to 15 repetitions = muscle tone/definition.

high weight and say 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 7 repetitions = muscle mass and strength.

Hope this helps.
THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS ASK A TRAINER TO HELP YOU OUT. HE'LL GIVE YOU A PROGRAM, AND EXPLAIN TO YOU HOW TO DO THE EXERCISES, HOW MANY SETS AND REPS. EVEN HELP YOU WITH YOUR DIET.

Should I lose weight? I love beer...?

I love beer and my friends told me I’ve gained too much weight. I am 6ft 3 and 198 lbs. how can I calculate my ideal weight, or bmi?
Answers: You’re not necessarily fat, but you could lose some weight. You can find a bmi and weight calculator at ProjectWeightLoss.com. They also have a bunch of tools to help you lose weight – like a menu and workout planner, and it’s free. It’s like a MySpace for people who want to lose weight.
Well, your BMI is 24.7. It's nearly overweight. I suggest you lose some weight so you're more in the average weight. Exercise daily and eat healthily.

Try not to eat junk food and fast food. Drink plenty of water and eat vegetables/fruits. You will lose some weight in a matter of time.

How can i get a flatter stomach and smaller hips?

will losing five pounds do the trick?
Answers: Losing wait will always help change your shape.
It is important to remember that you cannot target weight loss areas by training that area.
i.e. just doing sit-ups doesn't necessarily mean a flatter stomach.
I always tell people who are looking for a general overall weight loss the best exercise to do is walking.
It's simple, no need for expensive shoes or gym membership. It is low impact unlike jogging which can hurt your joints if you've not done much running.
30 mins a day brisk walk will soon produce results, smaller hips. If you feel comfortable doing them then a few crunches after your walk will help tighten your stomach.
Good luck.
erh it depends on how much u weigh already. five pounds really isn't a lot so unless u r already svelte and just need u belly to be tucked in a little, it wouldn make that much difference

How can you make your tummy flat?

How can you make your tummy flat with the help of dieting and no workouts...is this possible?...or if it is not..can biking help?....

add it is ok to eat more fruits...will it gonna make lose weight or will it just maintain my size and won't fatten me up?...

thanks for your opinions in advance....=)
Answers: tummy flat?
don't eat anything at night, that's all
lots of water during the day, i mean LOTS
is OK to eat fruits as long as hey do replace your regular snack (eating an apple instead of a twix is a much better idea)
If you want biking to help your goal you must bike in a competitive way, that means no sing along rides with the kids or with grandma
And give yourself TIME don`t expect to lose 20 pounds in a month, 6 pounds a month is a good goal, give yourself 4-5 moths of doing this and you`ll make it
believe me its worth it
the good old fashioned way, suck it in.... :) sorry couldn't resist...
cutting down on carbs will help..
Like anything that's worth it, this needs work... and sweat. Making pull ups every day helped me get a firmer and flatter belly. I started by doing 20 a day and now I can do as much as 50.
I don't think fruits will flatten your belly, but the others are right, you have to avoid greasy and junk food. It also depends on your metabolism : Maybe you won't have to do much to see a difference, but maybe it will take time. The important thing is, if it doesn't work right away, don't give up! There is no easy and fast solution for weight loss (actually a big industry is thriving on making you believe it is, while it's not, really).
Chibi_sy, has a very good answer, do what she says, but see a health care center, see a doctor, and visit health food store, before trying anything! Good Luck! Jimmy.
You really have to do crunches and sit ups if you want a flat tummy. Eat lean meat and other good protein source food, vegetables, fruits, and cut down on carbo, sweets, and carbonated drinks. For more tips to get that flat tummy, check out http://www.5TruthsAboutAbs.com

Question for nutritionists: What is a better fiber source, grains or produce?

On Oprah the other day, Dr. Mehmet Oz said that the best thing we can eat is fiber. I wanna know what's better, grains or veggies/fruits? Sometimes I either don't have or don't want grains, and prefer veggies and fruits instead. Is this okay, or would grains be a better source of fiber than produce? Does it matter - is it a toss up between grains and produce? What's the scoop? Any and all information is most welcome, thanx.
Answers: We get most of dietary fiber from fruit and veggies because they have more of it.
There are "fiber fortified" foods like cereals and bread which are good as well but if you choose those look for ones that are whole grain and not "made WITH whole grain".
All of them are good and necessary for our bodies - fruit and veggies will add more vitamins and minerals while grains (complex carbs) will give you energy.
If you dont get enough dietary fiber from food (25-35g a day) you can add more from psyllium husk you can get in health food store.
I think you can probably get better overall nutrition if you eat some fresh fruit and one very large raw veggie salad a day. I am not a nutritoinish, but I pay careful attention to our diet and the quality of the food we eat. You can make cream of vegetable soups and freeze them for future use. Everything should be in moderation.
Never eat white bread. Go with oatmeal or rye bread - as whole grain as possible - and you should be fine. You can get cholesterol lowering benefits from oat meal and oat bran.
i think that prouce would have more fiber beacuse most of it has alot of water...im not a nutritionist, but thats my opinion....bluedot
Either in moderation....
I lived with my Grandmother for 20 years. She was a Registered nurse and certified nutritionist for most of 45 years. She was always pushing literature pertaining to nutrition on me.Besides that she was constantly preaching to me that the most palatable means of obtaining the fiber we need is from fruits and vegetables.I also gathered this from the books ,journals, and pamphlets she kept me supplied with. Not that they are really any better than grains. But she always saved most of her grains to feed the chickens and other animals around.I suppose the answer is a toss up, but I would much prefer getting my necessary nutrients from fresh fruit and vegetables.

I've heard that cardio is'nt really that great for fat loss...so what is?

Answers: Don't know where you could've heard that. Probably from someone selling weight machines or gym memberships.

Getting rid of fat requires a calorie deficit, i.e., eating less than you need to fuel daily activities. Your body makes up the difference by using stored fat.

You can do this by any combination of eating less, or exercising more.

Burning calories/fuel/food requires oxygen. Your cardiovascular system delivers the oxygen.

Higher heart rate = more oxygen delivered = more calories burned

Any exercise or activity that significantly raises your heart rate for long periods of time will help with your fat problem. It should be pretty obvious that things like running, cycling and swimming would be the best at this.

Long term, weight lifting or other strength training can build muscle mass that will raise you basal metabolic rate (BMR = sedentary calorie requirements) slightly, but that's nowhere near as fast or effective as strenuous aerobic exercises (aka cardio) like those mentioned above.

Channel 7 story on lida slimming pills?

can someone tell me exactly what was in the story, why are they so bad and what do they cause,
Answers: As much as I remember they had something like amphetamine in them, so some women were getting like drug addicts on lida.
Never tried them myself. Wanted to try a few months ago, but after all the bad info I hear about lida, I am happy I did not.
For me acomplia has been the best. phentermine also showed good results, but i started to get addicted and it had way too nasty side effects.
happy not to have any sides with acomplia so far.
I am losing a pound or few every week.
It is very popular in UK, Germany and many other countries worldwide. Not so much in the US yet.
This is good site for Acomplia info if anyone's interested

How can i slim down my legs?

im 22 female and im about 5'1 , 97 lbs.i used to ballet since i was 5 but now i have quit . i notice that my thighs and calves are pretty big and i do have some muscle on my calves.

how can i make my legs slimmer? if i do some diet will it gets slimmer?is there any exercise without making them bulky? what food should i avoid to make my muscle even worst?

i found that nicole richie's legs pretty chunky but now she has a long lean and firm legs. how can i slim my legs like that?
Answers: Sounds like you've already got tone/muscle and that too much muscle might be your problem. Believe it or not [and I read it somewhere, too] walking bare foot tones your calves and ankles. Granted, it isn't to great for the pedicure, but I've been overweight before--everywhere except my legs and I believe it's because I'm bare foot more often than not.

Nicole Richie probably used a palates instructor, but there are videos you can buy/rent that friends of mine have used and were successful.
What I would reccommend is embarking on a cardiovascular program of 3-5 times a week, at least 30mins or more per session.
Incorporating a weight training program using moderate weights will also be beneficial. Use exercises like squats, lunges, leg extensions, hamstring curls. 4 sets each and keeping repetitions high from 15 to 20.

Has anyone tried the Japan LINGZHI Slimming Formula 2 DAY DIET pills?

I bought some for my mom I heard that they work...anyone use them? I took one to see if it would make me not hungry and I swear I felt high...whats in it?
Answers: I've actually been using them for about 3 months now and think I've figured a couple of things out. 1) They work a little like the Alli OTC diet pills that are all the rage right now, without the uncontrollable, oily...well...stool--gross, right? I say a "little like" because with Alli the warning is (and I'm paraphrasing) "if you eat too much fatty food, the more of that yucky side-effect you will have as the pill only blocks 15% of your fat intake..." or something to that effect. With this, if you overdo the fat intake, you may have some diarrhea, but you can eat like a pig and not gain an once. 2) If you actually eat like you have a little common sense, you WILL lose dramatic weight without the side effects. So, there you have it. I just came off of a 5-day cruise with a girlfriend who witnessed me eating EVERYTHING at all times of day and night. The minute I told her I'd somehow LOST 2 pounds, she demanded the name of the product!

Additionally, I'm 38, relatively active, never drank alcohol or smoked anything and don't get "high" taking the pills. The ingredients listed are: LingZhi, Ebony, Fox-Nut, Tuckahoe, Seman Pruni, Dioscoreae, Wheat Germ, Nature Substance (which I assume is "natural substance" because the English translations on the label are...a little off). Look up each ingredient on the internet for your own comfort.
Gah don't take it, such a stupid thing to buy those pills. They will basically starve you with chemicals and fillers until you lose weight. Bad bad bad for you.

How long did the weight stay off after done with Slim Quick Diet Pill?

im starting to take the pill soon however i just wanted to know how long the weight stayed off or how much weight was gained or loss after the bottle was done.
Answers: Nobody can answer that for you! It's just a question of diet. Fat burners are great help, but it's not magic! You need to have a diet plan, and keep it that way for a while. I suggest you also to exercise.

Does Weight Watchers have a program for pregnant women?

Answers: Oh, please don't diet when you are pregnant. Just eat healthy, nutritious foods and don't worry about the scale. The baby needs you to take good care of him/her. You can lose the weight after. For now, baby comes first!
Weight watchers and pregnant women, don't really go together do they!
Why are you asking?
I'm not so sure, I think a pregnant woman needs all the nutrients she can get, as does the baby..
Healthy eating is best I guess but i wouldnt do anything without asking my doctor first.
Good luck with everything, sorry I cant be more help
Paul
Actually it says in their rules you must not be pregnant - this must be because the 'experts' say that it is not beneficial for baby to diet whilst pregnant. If you are concerned, just ensure you get plenty of fruit and veg, carbs and protein and cut out the junk - but baby needs some fat so be careful. Better to wait nine months. And I understand exactly why youre asking as I considered it myself. But I shall have to wait until baby is born.
On a plus side I have not ballooned and I have a good weight (estimated obviousl,y) baby so I must be doing something right. If I am lower weight once I give birth I will be delighted but not actively trying, just trying to do right by baby.
No, Weight Watchers doesn't have a program for pregnant women. In fact, when I asked that question and was a member at the same time, they closed my account.

In pregnancy, you're not supposed to be dieting because it can do all kinds of bad things to your developing baby.

However, Weight Watchers DOES have a program for nursing mothers, so after about 6 weeks after the baby is born, you can join or rejoin and lose weight at a healthy rate while maintaining your milk supply.

If you don't nurse, then you can just start the regular program again.

Enjoy pregnant eating. I know I did! It's the one time where you truly can eat what you want to eat and nobody says anything about it.
