Diet Fitness Questions and Answers

I am going to a gym for the first time- what kind of shoes would be appropriate?

Tonight I will be wearing Converse All-Star low tops which are the only "athletic" shoes I have ever owned. I am however, pretty darn sure these are NOT the shoes I should be wearing.
I will be doing cardio, circut training, eliptical, treadmill ect.

I will be going shopping this weekend for some appropriate shoes and I need some help.
Please be specific with the brands/ types. I don't know ANYTHING about "trainers" "crosstrainers" "gym shoes" or the like- I live in flipflops and girly shoes.

I could also use some help w/ the cute/ cool brands but my first concern of course is having practical shoes so I don't hurt myself.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Answers: I have worked out at the gym in Nike Cross trainers for the last 12 years and never strayed from them. You will have many people tell you many different brands .

However, the important thing isn't brand but that you get

1. a cross trainer - or a body building shoes
but DO NOT get a shoe specified for walking or running. You will put pressure on the wrong parts of your feet and legs which will result in pressure and/or injury.

2. a shoe that fits your foot and that you are comfortable in. Have your foot measured before you try on anything by a professional. They will tell you what shoe will be best for your foot and if you need any additional insoles.

Happy footwork and have fun at the gym.
first of all, converse are HORRIBLE sneakers to wear when doing athletics.
they have no support whatsoever and are as thin as a piece of paper.
get Nikes, they are amazing(x
I would highly recommend a good pair of higher end new balance. The 991 and 992's are a perfect example of the New Balance models that offer great support on the sole and grip.

These are cross training shoes and can be worn for squating, running/cardio, and even casual wear.

I don't recommend running shoes like nikes/Asics because they are NOT approriate for weight lifting as they do not have a solid base/sole or side support.
Girlfriend, this is the time to let your divaness shine. Anything less then a $400 pair of stilettos is insulting. Don't worry about getting hurt. There are lots of hot trainers to make you all better.

20yrs old. weight 163. I'm looking to get cut/toned. Not bulky. What gets you cut quickest? I eat well too.

Question Details: Looking to get cut/toned. I don't want to be bulky or large. Just cut really well. I have been eating well the past 3 weeks. and a apple every 2 hours after breakfast, lunch, and after dinner half a zone perfect bar. i workout about a half hour a day. pushups, light weights, crunches. when will i see good results? please help. no smartass comments please. Thanks.
Answers: alrite, keep on continuing your good diet
be sure to include lots of protein from meats, fish, or protein bars if you lift.
If you want to get cut you need to somehow get the fat around your stomach out.
I advise running and other cardio activities.
If you have a gym membership go to the gym and start lifting a little. to get bigger abs that pop out you need to have resistance aka weights.
and do not over exercise your muscle
for example exercise your pecs, triceps, and legs one day
then the next day your back, biceps, and abs

to build bigger muscles to get toned, you need to be able to rep the weight only 4-8 times this breaksdown the muscle and gets it bigger
so if you are doing more reps little weight i recomend you not to do ti
Sounds like you're doing all the right things, to start feeling affects it takes about a month, to see definition it takes almost 3 months. Keep doing what you're doing, and if it gets to easy with weights, increase them only a few pounds, or do more reps with the same weight.

Although I've never ran to lose weight, I heard it is good for defined abs, and of course your heart.

Distorted Body Image?

I am 15 years old, 5'4 and 3/4 inches and 103 pounds, and since I was 14, I always thought I was fat. Now it has gotten to such a level that I am embarassed to go to ballet class because I think I gained weight during the day. At home, all I do is obsess about my weight. I excersize 3-4 hours a day, not including Sundays, and 2 hours on Saturdays. No one has told me taht I am fat, but i am alwasy reading about how to lose weight, and I am not losing anything. Please help with this!
Answers: If taking ballet is not making you feel good, you should stop. Many girls feel worried about their bodies in so many ways at your age. You should remember that and do nothing drastic. Ballet should make you proud of what you can do not only ashamed of what you can't do. And if you feel like you want to be a bit better, that 's great, but don't do anything drastic, ask your teacher if she/he has any tips. And you can compare yourself with other women for the rest of your life and it seldom makes you feel any good/better unless you already are confident and happy with yourself. Remember!
Yes, honey, this is taking up way too much of your time. I treat adults who have eating disorders, and they exercise as much as you. And they're terrified of gaining weight, and they think all the time about how to lose weight, and they probably weigh a lot more than you.

Do your parents notice how much you think about this? Do you feel safe telling them about it? This is something you should get help for... you're not supposed to suffer this much over your body.
Your body is perfect! Just keep telling yourself that you are beautiful. You are even below average weight for your height. Don't let the media influence you.
Maybe you are just interested in nutrition.
I love reading all the articles that aol.com puts out about health, diet and fitness.

Just keep smiling
Body dysphoria is an attitude disorder that affects millions of women and girls in Western society. The term body dysphoria is used to describe a woman's badly distorted view of her body. It is a warning sign for eating disorders, but more significantly, it indicates a harmful self-destructive and disempowering attitude. Beauty obsession eats away at a woman's sense of self-esteem, and experts agree that poor self-esteem lies at the heart of most eating disorders.
My first thought is that you need to seek some guidance in the form of a psychologist. The first step is to get in to see your doctor and let them know how you're feeling. The earlier you you take back your power the better the prognosis for a complete recovery. Your doctor can get you in touch with those who are trained to help you understand what you're feeling and how to help you overcome those feelings and live a full healthy life. Please do it now before this becomes a full blown crisis ok?..good luck

Am I really too heavy for my age?

I am a 13 year old male, i am 5'0, weigh 152 pounds, have a 46 inch waist, and unfotunately am pretty flabby. Please give it to me straight. Am I really overweight, not at all, or a little overweight.
Answers: Yes, I am sorry to tell you...but you are over weight. The weight range for a person your height is 90-125 lbs. But it is recommend to stay between 95-120. You are young though...so it will be easy to take off....Eat healthier and exercise everyday and the weight will fly off. Don't cheat either, make sure to stay on task. If you need more information on dieting just edit your question and I will re-edit you a diet plan. I know alot of really good ones.

Good luck =]
For your age and height...YES you are overweight. A 45" waist isn't healthy with your height and weight either.
Why not start on a nutrition program, but before doing that, consult your Dr.
You're overweight, but at that age it's easy to take off.

Is it okay to get moderate cardio exercise when trying to build muscle mass?

okay so right now im on a 2muscles 2 times a week 6 days a week lifting routine and i'm trying to build mass. I workout ussually in the afternoon between two of my classes and I get my protien/carb shake 30 mins after and a meal an hour later and throughout the day to keep up that anabolic state my body is in, but I also like to go to a lot of dance clubs so i'm dancing alot and is that aerobic exercise going to bring me out of an anabolic state?

Additional Details 4 days ago
Also if it's unclear i'm NOT trying to lose weight, actually i'm trying to increase muscle mass so i'm really trying to put on weight.
4 days ago oh and also it's not fast pace dancing, I prefer the, I'm not sure what it's called, but when the girl grinds on the guy from the back. it's kinda slow.
I actually get decent sleep and I eat plenty of calories ussually very healthy whole, unproccessed foods and enough lean protien throughout the day
Answers: yeah, moderate cardio isn't going burn that many calories (maybe like 150-200), hence it won't put you in the negative with your daily calorie intake if you're eating a good bit. that's what you need to worry about anyways, as long as you end up with some extra calories at the end of the day, you're on your way towards gaining mass.

i do want to point out that your body doesn't go in one "mode" or another. it's always a mixture of both anabolism and catabolism. i know what you're trying to say with how your body increases its anabolic activty after working out to repair yourself, but that process has been said to persist for up to 48 hours after lifting.

just keep feeing your body with clean fuels, and lifting heavy!

Can you please honestly tell me if i'm fat or not?

If i'm 14-years-old, 4'11.5 feet tall and 85 pounds is that fat?
Please be honest.
Answers: You're okay. Any lower and I'd worry about your health, though.
no and ur way to young to worry bout that

Looking for any "FIRM believers" ?

I have used The FIRM wokouts since I was 16 at first just to be in shape I was already thin. Then after my first baby at 21 I used them to lose a little weight and get back in shape now aftera very stressful divorce and baby number 2 (with hubby number2) at 26 I am using them to lose a lot of weight and get back in shape . Hopefully before my very thin and fit dietician sisters wedding in June I don't want to be the fat matron of honor. Haha anyway... I love these workouts and swear by them so I was just wanting to hear from anybody else who has used and or likes them too. I am so excited that they branched out and did a Yoga dvd too. I love yoga as well and was having a hard time finding one I liked now I have the firm one. Has anyone tried the pilates one by the Firm?? I am thinking about getting it too and would love feedback on it. Right now my favorite dvd is Ultimate Fat Burning Workout with Alison Davis.
Answers: My ex-roommate was at it every morning with the weights. I would look at the incredibly thin woman with the huge weights and think, "that's some serious dedication". You have given me some motivation to put in my own tape and give it a go. Best of luck to you...I know what divorce can do to your state of mind. I didn't know they did a Yoga dvd, or a pilates - thanks for the info. You are going to be just GORGEOUS at the wedding, darling. Have a great time & knock em' out.

Am I overweight?

i'm a girl and i'm 13 years old (i turn 14 in february). i'm 5'4" and i weigh 120. is this overweight? i do get exercise regularly and i do dance for 2 hours every week.
Answers: nope =]
i think it comes down to what all u do, and seeing as ur physicly active, thatd be just about all muscle (especially wiff a dancer)
No, absolutely not.

good weight for that height, just continue exercising and don't "listen to Hollywood"
hahahahahaha, no!!
thats good.
keep it that way,
same as me!
but you know that 75 pound girl you sound way underweight i have a friend like that and she looks ugly. shes flat and yucky sick looking.
nope! You sound really skinny. I'm 13, 5'1 and around 90 pounds, but I think I'm slightly underweight so ur fine :) I wish I was 5'4 lol.
P.S. don't listen to the 75 pound girl who said ur overweight, she sounds anorexic and thats REALLY unhealthy. ur fine but she's not, lol :)
NOT AT ALL!! You're BMI (body mass index) is 20.6 which means you're HEALTHY. Your weight also depends on how much muscle vs fat you have, b/c muscle weighs more than fat. Dancing can really increase muscle tone (I know bc I'm a dancer too!!)
Also, when you go through puberty, these "changes" cause and include weight gain. But don't try to stunt these "changes" to lose weight b/c it can cause hormonal issues (ex: messed up periods, mood swings/depression, nothing fun)
No, you seem good.
No you are probably on the thin side. You need to worry about other things then your size as long as you are healthy and happy. Try asking yourself am I happy and content with myself.
