Has anyone heard of the diabetes medication, metformin, being used for weight loss?
My doctor, who prefers the natural way, prescribed this medication for me and said it was safe. He said it was great for weight loss, and it can also be used, orally of course, to do a body cleanse. I don't have diabetes, but he said that wouldn't matter because the medication if safe. Any serious feedback will be greatly appreciated. Please don't advise on weight loss techniques, and address this medication as I'm am very concerned about it. Thanks in advanceAnswers: Actually, Metformin (or Glucophage) is not only used to reduce glucose levels, but insulin, and testosterone as well. The side effects of which reduce all of the following; acne, hirsutism, abdominal obesity, and amenorrhea.
Metformin has many other health benefits and relatively low negative side effects. Your doctor or pharmacist should be able to address those concerns better though.
The short answer to your question is yes. It should help reduce weight. Glucophage has been proven to have had positive effects on pregnancy as well as negative though. So if you are planning or thinking about having kids soon, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist this as well.
Hope that helps!
yup your doc is right, its well known that metformin causes weight loss, its a very old drug and used by millions worldwide its what they call first line choice for type two diabetes, obesity is major factor in causing diabetes so the fact this drug helps with weight loss and controlling blood sugar levels is amazing
its safe in that it has a long proven history in that it works and no real serious side effects unless you have kidney problems
Metformin is used for weightloss in women who have PCOS. Mostly because a majority of women with PCOS are Insulin Resistant which is kind of the opposite of Diabetes. Metformin helps to sensitize your cells to insulin so you stop overproducing insulin IF your insulin resistant.
If you do not have PCOS and Insulin Resistance I STRONGLY recommend that you do not take this medication. It's very hard on your body and yes it can be kind of considered a cleanse but it's not healthy. It gives you a horrible stomach ache and the urge to go #2 at random times...sometimes you might barely make it to the bathroom...sorry if that's TMI.
I would consider another doctor for weightloss if you do not have PCOS or Insulin Resistance. But if you do have it...take it and stick with it, make sure you take it every day as prescribed, it will help with weightloss but you need to diet and exercise in order to really lose weight. Metformin just helps your body proccess sugar, which is not done with insulin resistance.
When is the best time to join 24 Hour Fitness?
I want to joint 24 hour but want to wait for a good deal. Obviously I want to pay little or nothing up front and have a low monthly payment. Month-to-Month is important too. It seems like right after New Years is a good time, but I don't necessarily want to wait that long either.Answers: dont know which part of US you are in. Different 24 hr fitness centers have diff. promotions going on at diff. times of the year. Check out your local 24hr center, and get a complimentary 2 or 4 wk pass. It'l help you make a decision if you really want to continue w/ them or not. A few days before ur complimentary gym pass expires, talk to sales people and they'll definitely throw in a good deal to sign U up.
I'm only 5"4, and 91 pounds, But I feel like my stomach is huge, Do I have to diet?
I am the one without the towel on, The taller one...http://s127.photobucket.com/albums/p126/...
Is my stomach really that big, I feel like I'm pregnant all the time, I feel huge...
Answers: Well, if you want to be bulemic or annorexic, you totally should!
You are under weight, and have a nice figure. I know lots and lots of hot girls that have some complex about how they are ugly, overweight, and other negative things. With the first few I tried and tried to logically convince them they were not fat, but they didn't really listen, at which point I gave up.
So, your figure is totally fine, you don't need to lose weight, if you think you do, there's really nothing I can do. At least try not to actually give yourself a health problem by getting an eating disorder though.
Not too bad. Maybe you have worms.
I think you need to exercise, get some muscle tone.
Trust me. That's not big. You do not need to lose weight.
The fact that you think you do, and that you're considering diets (never a good idea as they're just an unsustainable temporary quick fix) would suggest you may have the beginnings of an eating disorder.
The problem lies in your mind, and how you percieve your own personal image.
I would strongly recommend that you talk to your GP or a counsellor to discuss the reasons why you think you're overweight, as this could develop into a full blown eating disrder if it's left unchecked.
And let me just stress to you once again. You are definitely NOT overweight, and you really don't need to lose any weight.
You have a thin frame and you ARE skinny. (You are in no way fat. Your hipbones -SHOWS-.) You actually look like quite a pretty girl in my opinion! You are beautiful - don't think I'm saying that to be nice, I -really- do think you look great. :) Don't worry about it and turn your focus on things that ARE really important in your life (like your interests, family, friends, school etc.), not insignificant things like your tiny stomach. Maybe you're just a little bloated, but really I think your stomach just looks like that because of your posture. It's no big deal, nobody really cares except you and all the other weight-obsessed, media-brainwashed people. If you are still that much worried about it I would suggest that you try drinking more water everyday, eat less salt and eat more fiber-rich foods (fruit, whole grains, and vegs - adding these foods to your daily diet is not that hard and you can still eat whatever you're used to).
Remember, just because you "feel" fat does NOT mean that you ARE fat. There's happiness, there's sadness, there's anger, but as far as I know fat isn't really a feeling.
I don't want to sound harsh or rude, but this is all mostly in your mind. 91 pounds is nowhere near fat. You sound relatively insecure to me - try working first on your self-confidence before making any changes on the exterior. Stand tall and proud of who you are, every girl is beautiful regardless of her weight and so are you.
You know, if I had by chance stumbled across that picture, I would never have even noticed your "fat" little tummy unless you had said so yourself like you are now. People may see you, judge you, and some may even be shallow enough to praise you, envy you, or criticize you for it depending on their own self-esteem... but when it comes down to it, weight doesn't really matter as much. Think about it. Will having a flat stomach, toned legs, and a perfect figure make you any more successful than you are? Will it get you a PhD (just an example)? Will it make your parents love you any more than they do? Will it pay the rent? Will it make you any happier? (There are MANY thin, skinny girls and models who still feel unhappy about themselves because of their perceived "flaws". And you are one of them.). No, being any thinner won't make you any happier. Sure it looks nice, but that is all. You're already very good-looking and it's not necessary for you to worry about it. Unless you're a professional athlete, bodybuilder, or model, weight is no big deal and you should go on with enjoying every day regardless of what it is. It's not like your life depends on whether you've a perfect body or not anyway, nor will it make a significant difference.
Don't be so judgmental of your body, let it weigh and just be what it is. It's healthy and is your vehicle for life - as long as you're alive you'll be stuck in it whether you like it or not. Start rejecting the diet mentality and unrealistic body expectations and instead learn to respect your body so you can feel better about who you are. Be grateful you are healthy and treat your body well. Eat healthfully, get some dialy exercise and make time for your beauty rest (sleep is VERY important! especially for growing children and teens...).

I am 5"4, 15 years old, a Girl, and 93 pounds.
Is this too heavy?
Lately, I've been feeling really fat, Am I fat?
1 day ago - 2 days left to answer.
You either a compulsive liar or bulimic?
Why are you asking all of these crazy questions?
You need help ! Please see a doctor for this!
You're not fat, but it doesn't look like you're in very good shape, either. You might consider getting some exercise to build some muscle, which looks better than just skin and bones.
The tummy bulge you see may actually be a lack of muscle and poor posture, not because of fat. 91 pounds is very skinny for your height and age (about 15). You should focus on eating more, gaining some muscle tone, which makes a balanced body.
I would try exercising at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and eating 1800 calories a day, although you might want to see a doctor to get a better plan going. At your weight, you might be a candidate for eating disorders, so you should get help with a plan to get a healthy and attractive body.
Can someone recommend a whey protein mix at GNC?
Anyone bought any whey protein mix at GNC lately? Any recommendation?Answers: I generally don't go to GNC, a lot of their stuff is overpriced. I'm likewise not certain if everything they have on their website is carried in stores, but the Optimum Nutrition they have listed is very popular and decently priced (its what I use). They have several sizes and flavors so its dependent on how much you want at a time and your personal preferences.
Will I lose weight this way?
Morning: I eat about 4 strawberries also eat about 5 tbs of yougartlunch:
I eat a turkey sandwhich with white bread no cheese 1 tomatoe 1 slice of lettus .
Dinner:
I had a half sandwhich white bread and turkey meat!
Answers: You will not lose weight eating what you just posted.
Trust me...I tried it and it does not work! You are slowing down your metabolism.
Also, white bread is not good for you. Wheat bread is preferable.
Here is the secret.....
The way you lose weight and fat is by increasing your metabolism. And the way you achieve this is by eating 5 to 6 small healthy meals per day with a little exercise.
My brother and I lost a lot of weight during our first and second week of exercising. I believe in my case....it was mostly water weight. I lost 5 pounds in several days and my waistline was definitely slimmer.
Our morning and evening exercise routine consisted of a 30-minute combination of ab exercises, stationary bicycling, push-ups and Taebo-style aerobic workout.
However, after the third week of exercise, I noticed that the weight was not coming off as easily.
So, I decided to add lifting weights from tips I found in a fitness article from the website at http://xrl.us/7if7
My weight really started coming off quick with the easy weight training and we did it all from home. I ate the same food as before which consisted of:
Breakfast
3 scrambled eggs, slice of wheat toast, yogurt
oatmeal or....
Special K cereal with banana
protein shake or water
Mid-Morning Snack
apple sauce, unsalted sunflower seeds, few pieces of cantelope
Lunch
turkey or chicken sandwich (ingredients: whole grain wheat bread with mustard, mesquite turkey or chicken, lettuce and tomato)
water or cranberry juice
tangerine or orange
yogurt
salad
Post Lunch
fruit
yogurt
unsalted cashews
Dinner
rice
steamed or slightly boiled vegetables (squash, cucumbers, carrots, green beans, onions, garlic, red or green pepper)
beets
water or protein shake
Post-Dinner
Yogurt or....
4 or 5 ginger snaps or.....
2 slices of tomatoes with a small portion of turkey or skinless chicken
water
The simple weight training along with the meal plan burned the fat and calories like magic.
I certainly hope this helps you in your quest to slim down.
Keep up the good work and don't give up!
yeah. i guess
don't starve yourelf
yea
yeah because ur eating less calories
no. you dont actually lose weight from starving youraself in the long run!
I guess, but you don't want to starve yourself to death. You can eat more, just eat healthy. Maybe work out a little.
AND WORK OUT
Yeah, you will lose weight... but you should work out with it too, because you will lose muscle and your skin will sag, and id rather be chunky than have saggy skin .
idk? but still having a proper meal is recommended &+ yur sposed to be happy the way yu are (=
um, just make sure that you eat lots of vegetables and fruit and rub coco butter on ur body so u wont get fat lines
judging from your picture id say you dont need to lose weight at all...
You should eat a little bit more and do more excersice plus, if i were u, i would eat more at supper. But your methode should work really well.
You arnt taking in enough nutrients or calories. This is harmful to your body and your overall health. I'd try to eat a bit more. If you are looking to lose weight, eat a lot more vegetables and fruits. Change your white break to whole grain wheat bread, too.
you may lose weight-but it's gonna kill your body because it's not getting the nutrition it needs. the key to losing weight is not eating less, but eating the right combinations in moderation and having a healthy lifestyle. and this sort of diet will cause your metabolism to slow down in the long run...another thing you don't want
i think yes but you could lose weight faster if you keep eating like that and you do something active
Sure. All you have to do is stay away from the unhealthy stuff. but b careful because if dont eat enough then you can starve and die and then it wont matter how fat u r.
really changing your eating habits is a really small way to to loose weight if you want to loose weight you should exercise. make it a daily thing.
umm not really it matters.......just try not to starve urself...i satarted to eat less and was really unhealthy ...sometimes u get skinnier if u eat more...but not fatty stuff...eat lots of fruit and veggies :)
Yeah, great diet. That'll send you on the road to eating disorders, malnutrition and major health issues. Who doesn't like stomach ulcers? More fruit and veggies, less white bread (go for whole grain). More water. More activity. More sleep. You don't need to starve yourself to stay in shape.
4 strawberries and a tomato isn't enough fruit and veggies to keep you healthy! you aren't even eating enough calories to stay healthy. Yes you will loose some weight, but as soon as you get off this awful diet, you will put more on. You are starving your body and it will hord fat to have enough on hand for the next time you starve yourself! EXERCISE is the answer to loosing weight! If you are serious about loosing then get up and keep moving!
only if you already weigh about 50 lbs!
you need to eat more. i'd say about double your portions, and you'll lose lots of weight fast while still feeling great! if you don't eat enough you'll feel awful, trust me.
stick to it!
[marshmallow]
no stop!! im serious!! i fell into this trap trying to lose weight for modeling and it works .. BUT there is a better way and u WILL be starving off 10 -7 lbs a week but not so starving ur feeling dizzy and sick all the time TRUST ME
eat exactly 1000 calories a day
dont work out unless u want to
and once every other day up it to 1200
and on the third day 900
then back to 1000
then to maintain eat 1600 calories a day
( calories are on the back of packages)
COUNT THEM ALL HONEY
every last one!
and trust me
u will be a ******* rail in no time ; )
yes but
1. you'd get bored after a few days.
2 bread bloats your stomach.
3 you'll just put more weight on after stopping eating like this as your body will try to build up the fat store again!
That sounds kind of like a crash diet. You may drop some pounds, but it can easily come back if you start eating normal again. The foods you are eating are good for you, but try making variations and adding to your diet. Why torture yourself? Just exercise and that will do the trick. Try to be healthy, not border-line anorexic.
Oh, and if you want to lose weight the healthy way (tried and true, just takes some dedication!):
Eat around 1,200 calories and exercise by doing cardio. But make sure those aren't empty calories - eat what you like and what's nutritious but maintain good portions. And make sure to grab a sweet treat here or there so you're not tempted to gorge yourself later! Best of luck.
PS. Use wheat bread instead of white because it's healthier.
If you eat too little, your metabolic rate drops, because your body is trying to stop you from starving, so it uses the calories more slowly.
You need to take at least 1000 calories a day and do at least 45 minutes of exercise every couple of days to lose weight.
You also need to ensure that you are taking in the correct nutrients. You seem to be excluding fat. In doing this, you are also excluding all the essential nutrients that can only be obtained from fat, because they don't dissolve in water.
If you wish to lose weight, you should follow a diet that keeps you healthy, otherwise you will become weak and damage your immune system, and you will not have the resources in your body to fight off any illness that you come into contact with.
You will but you are not eating healthy and you are depriving yourself. That means you will gain the weight back plus more and end up overindulging. You should talk to a dr or personal trainer to set up a healthy & realistic plan to lose the weight and keep it off.
If you diet without exercising, will you lose muscle mass?
I've heard that if you just sit around while dieting, you will lose muscle as well as fat.Answers: It's not like muscle mass will fall off, but eventually (after a very long period of time) you will lose some. It's kind of like food. If you have it but dont eat it, it will go bad eventually.
If you don't exercise period, you will lose muscle mass. This gets worse the older you get as well. If you don't use it, you lose it! :)
WHAT ARE THE BENEFlTS OF EATING A POTATO?
DOES A POTATO HELP IN ANY WAY? AND JUST TO MAKE SURE, ITS FAT FREE RIGHT?Answers: High in potassium, high in fiber, low in calories (it's the butter and sour cream that makes it fattening,) loaded with vitamins (google "vitamins in potatoes",) you can fill it with anything and make a meal! (like hamburger and lettuce and tomato, for example. Or beans and veggies) Easy cooking in the microwave.
Potatoes are healthy and yummy!! Yes, fat free. :)
How many calories do now and laters have?
Answers: 1oz (or about 7 pieces) have approx 110 calories, and 25g of carbs. However, most fruit candies use corn syrup as a sweetening ingredient, which in lab tests shows up as a carbohydrate rather than a sugar. Corn syrup is made from corn starch and glucose (aka a simple sugar), so its a bit misleading to say it has 25g of carbs, almost all carbs in candy are sugars.
What is the best protein powder or creatine to not gain that much weight?
I am a lineman for my high school football team and i am looking to get big this off season. I don't want to gain that much weight, but i want to gain lots of muscle. What is the best protein or creatine i can take to ensure this?Answers: taking whey protein would get you lean mass and not much fat and creatine is good for mass but it makes you hold water weight which isnt fat but it does add pounds.i use muscle provider by beverly international because it is a mixture of proteins. i gained around 5 to 10 pounds of muscle in 3 weeks and 30 pounds on my bench in 3 weeks when i started using it. make sure you take enough amino acids to help rebuild muscle. i also stacked my muscle provider with armageddon(NO supplement) and i got good results
When lifting weights, what is it called when you start with the bar on the ground in front of u?
you lift to your waist, then ur shoulders, the over ur head. Do I have it right? Is this a good full body exercise?Answers: its called clean and press. you ave it right.
go to this site for more info on how to to do it ya want and scroll down to see an explanation on how to do it properly
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercise...
it works your mainly your Shoulders but also works your Triceps, Biceps, Lower Back, Traps, Hamstrings, Calves, Abdominals, Shoulders, and Glutes
im guessin it is a pretty good full body exercise.
This is the Clean and Press and no it's not what happens at the laundromat.
It's actually a very effective exercise for developing overall strength and balance. It used to be an Olympic weightlifting event prior to 1972
It is not regularly used by bodybuilders, so that's why many may not see it performed in gyms lately.
Before you try it yourself, you may want to find some training and instruction on power lifting or competitive weight lifting from a local club or college.
Good Luck.
I dont understand ..?
how to measure ounces of food when i am counting calories without a scale ?most sites say an ounce of this or that but how much is an ounce
Answers: an ounce is 28g. some food's will tell you about how much an ounce is on the nutrition facts. like pretzels say that 18 pretzels=28g=1 oz. but if you are trying to measure an ounce of fruit or something that doesn't tell you, you need a special scale that you can buy at places such as bed bath beyond.
It's tough to get it right without a scale. They're cheap, pick one up anywhere. I saw a brand new Weight Watchers scale still in the sealed box for $1.99 at value village...
