Can i burn fat by squatting weight?

i have a dumpy-*** gut and i freaking want to get rid of it and everytime i try to eat less or run more i never stick with it. i do a lot of upper body lifts so my arms and chest are pretty strong. however i never do leg work. if i build muscle in my legs and glutes can i burn fat? ( if any freaking person tries to spam me with lose weight fast bullshit i will plant a virus on their computer)
Answers: Muscle burns calories, so building muscle can help you lose weight. Your leg and butt muscles are the largest muscle groups in your body, so if you're not working them, you're missing an opportunity to add muscle where it will do the most good. Also, building legs will benefit your upper body by providing a strong foundation. Of course if you want to burn off that gut faster, cut the sugar and junk food out of your diet (especially soda and other sugary drinks) and find a cardio activity you enjoy. Do it at least 3 times a week, 30 minutes each time.

Is limited use of purging as part of a weight loss plan bad?

A friend of mine who has about 50 pounds to lose is thinking of vomiting about 3 times a week (to get rid of about 1000 caloires each time), in conjuction with some dieting and exercise. My friend is pointing out out that this is not at all bulimia -- she is just trying to lose some weight. She has done lots of research, and will be doing things to prevent the various side effects (eg from the acid, electrolyte imbalance, etc). She did point out that at 3 times a week, the side effects won't be that bad regardless, but she is still going to address them.

At first I was telling her this was a bad idea, but after talking with her, it really seems like not a bad option. Obviously if you are puking 5 times a day it is a bad idea, but as part of a weight loss program that includes cutting out sugar, high fat foods, and exercise... I don't know. It seems like she's making a good point.... I'm thinking her choice makes sense. What do you think?

Yes, it's bad. It's always bad. How about not putting that extra 1000 calories into your body in the first place? Seems like a much simpler solution to me.

Also, vomiting is very damaging to the esophagus. Stomach acids are VERY corrosive to other parts of the body than the stomach itself. It wears away the enamel on your teeth, as well.
loosing weight = good idea.
purging = bad
here's why: it burns your esophagus. that is irreparable.
it eats the enamel off of your teeth.
it screws with your digestion, think of the confusion your body world feel,, produce acid, or don't?
if purging was 100% safe and effective id say go for it but its not. and if she starts doing it she *will* get addicted to doing it.
MOST importantly though is you absorb most of the calories from food by the time you can puke it back up / get rid of it by going to the bathroom, so its pointless. its just not wise.

something else i should mention that i havent seen mentioned yet, the more she forces herself to throw up, the weaker her gag reflex will become... ask any bulimic, they'll probably tell you that aside from all the other damage they've done to their body, that a mere dry cough can be enough to make them throw up.
Absolutely not. I would say it's a terrible idea. The very fact that she is planning on it is disturbing to me. Purging at all is a very bad idea, and I very much doubt it would be as regulated as she says. Purging is not the activity of a mentally healthy individual and I would encourage her to address the issues leading her to consider this and to seek counseling.

This is not to say she's crazy; I generally think that nearly everyone could benefit from some counseling time. I just think this signifies possible problems that should be nipped in the bud.
gastric acid burns. Plain and simple. If you're going to vomit up your last meal, why not just skip that meal in the first place, and avoid the risk? It's a waste of time, money, and effort to eat and then chuck. It's also insulting to the cook, not to mention bad breathe, etc.

Instead of vomiting 1000 calories 3 times a week ( assuming 1000 calories = 1 meal), that's 21 000 calories - 3000 = 18000 per week. Why not just eat an 850 calorie meal instead? That's like cutting out half a dessert per meal, or one glass of milk per meal.

c) it damages your esophagus. i have no idea how she plans to prevent that one.

e) i used to have an eating disorder. they're not a joke; they're a mental illness. even if you start innocently, things can get out of control fast. soon, 3 times a week won't be good enough & it will turn into 3 times a day.
f) just don't do it.
She should not purge as from my understanding purging can be addictive when results are seen. People purge as a means to control something in their lives in her case its her weight and her poorly thought out will not work.
She needs to first eat healthier foods, buy a health food cookbook and religiously stick to the foods that they tell you to eat. She then needs to develop some sort of an exercise program that will work for her and seek your support and motivation. It is as simple as that. Lose weight the right way.

Eat what you need
Cut back or maintain a healthy caloric intake
Exercise daily ( something aerobic and strengthening)
Discipline yourself and repeat everyday. Good luck.
It sounds like a good idea, really... but you'll do it those few times a week. And it'll feel amazing. You're going to feel great about yourself, and feel empty and proud. So, you'll think "Another time a week won't hurt." and it'll get worse. I know it doesn't seem like it, but purging has been proven to be addictive. Bullimics don't want to do it, but they feel they 'have' to.

I think that the fact that you are trying to lose weight and purging is a bad combination. It's the pretense for an eating disorder. You might think "That'll never happen to me. I don't hate myself. I don't hate my body. I don't want to starve, ect." but your mind changes over time. Losing weight and purging is VERY addictive.

I hope this doesn't sound mean. Purging does work at first. It will help you lose weight. But then you'll binge, because one day after you purge, you'll feel SO hungry. You'll binge and then purge that. You won't be able to stop. It'll control your life. Go on a diet, eat healthier.. that's all fine. But in the long run, you'll wish you never started.

By the way, purging only gets rid of 10-50% of calories, and that's only if you do it RIGHT afterwards. It also causes you to become hungrier. That is why most bullimics gain weight over time.
It's dangerous,apart from the risk of choking it could be the start of the slippery slope to bulimia.Instead of purging 3 times a week, which will lose no weight at all,tell her to drink plenty of water, watch what she eats and get more exercise.
Now for the fun bit,if vomiting 3 times week will get rid of 3000 cals,what the heck is she eating for it to come out at the rate of 1000cals a vomit?
its hard to answer that, bulimia is bad i was bulimic why not jsut cut out the meals in stead fo throwing it back up.
seruosly hard to answer, bottom line is that he will become dependant on this to lose the weight, even with diet and exercise she will start to feel like anyfood is too much. and then instead of once a week its 3 times a day or how ever often she eats. its not something to play with. believe me on that. its perminantly changes how you view food and how your body reacts to it.

Not a great idea, as there are better ways to control weight. Purging doesn't get rid of any calories other than those you just ate. Eating sensible meals and exercise are better options. If you aren't eating lots of calories, why would you need to throw them up?

It also seems like a method that could lead to anorexia, as one will be getting used to purging. It might become too tempting.

Is it possible to lose 7 pounds in a month without doing anything?

i lost around seven pounds this month and i havent been dieting or anything. i just find that really weird!!
Answers: You probably started drinking more water. If you don't drink enough water, your body will automatically hold 5 pounds of water in your tissues. When you start drinking enough (32-64 ounces in a day) then your body will let go of that 5 pounds of water held in your tissues. Another thing: When you are drinking enough water, you will be thirsty for more water.
while a certain amount of water is good for the body, too much water can..yes...dehydrate you...by flushing too much out.
to get back to the question, the answer is, yes..if one of the things that are in the 'do nothing' is eat.
just go on a sensible diet, excersize and get the right amount of sleep.

I need to lose at least 30-40 pounds in about 3 months, whats the best way to do this?

Answers: This is my theory and this is what works for me. Everyone is different so it may need to be adjusted to your own personal needs.

Energy In/Energy Out

Food Intake: 1,200 Per Day

One Pound equals 3,500 Calories

To loose one pound per day, You need to burn your food intake plus your one pound of fat

1,200 (intake) + 3,500 (Outtake) = 4,700 Calories Burn

You must burn at least 4,700 Calories everyday to loose one pound at least. It is very easy to go up and beyond 4,700 calories each day.

Best way to do this is to track your progress on a calorie counter monitor watch. If you do it by the numbers you can loose the weight. It is just a matter of changing the way you think about weight loss.

Once you start wearing your calorie counter you can see the numbers increase and you fill find yourself doing extra things in your day, like tapping your foot while waiting at the light in your car, chewing gum, singing out loud and so on onto of your workout routines. You begin to see that everything you do in your day contributes to the overall numbers needed to loose that pound.

I, myself, have done this recently. Two weeks later, I lost one pant size and 10 pounds. And that is just my current progress. I have used this method previously after childbirth and have gone from 168 to 127 pounds with in two months.

I personally burn 1,000 calories by Walking in my community for one hour in the morning and I also burn 1,000 calories by simply using a stationary bike while playing xbox. I get so involved in playing xbox that I completely forget I am pedaling or working out. Think about it..How many hours have you spent playing video games..why not burn calories while you are doing it.

Water Intake/Less Storage

If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

Good Food

My favorite things to eat:

Avocado Wraps

Simple: Low Carb Tortilla, Half Avocado sliced, alpha sprouts, lettuce, soy bacon...Just wrap it up and eat. You can vary the things you put inside so long as you keep it to approx 4 or 5 items. You want to make sure they are fresh, low calorie and filling. Avocado and mushrooms can replace meats in your meal and still have great taste.

Special K Cereals are fantastic. They have that sweetness that one craves and is so good for you. Calories are low. Great for even just dinner.

First thing in the morning...A Glass of Chocolate Milk. Yup!! Chocolate Milk. We all crave that "got to have" item in the morning. Milk is the best thing you can have for yourself while working out. The chocolate (and you can use Carnation Instant Milk for this but I simply use Nestle dry mix) will give you that sweet "snack" that you need. If you give your body a little bit of it and its in a control way, you will not crave sweets and junk the rest of the day.

Lean Cuisines

Fantastic food! Each meal is approx 180 t0 380 calories per box. So think about your calories. 1,200...You can still have several of these meals a day and still be under your intake requirements.

It’s all about the numbers and watching what you take in and what you burn out. And you know what..If you go over your 1,200 mark for food intake...that’s okay...you simple up your total calories burned for the day by what you took it. So long as you burn off the over all calories to be more than your food intake. Just make sure you stick too it so you can reach your weight loss goals.

My favorite is ONE A DAY WITH ENERGY...I am in love with this vitamin because I am just like everyone else who loves those quick fix energy drinks. But what people do not realize is that energy drinks can contain 120 to 440 calories in just ONE Can. If you think about it..That is HALF of your allowed calories for food intake. The best alternative I have found is One a day with energy vitamin. Easy to spot, it is packaged in a green label bottle. Soda/Carbonation

Carbonation is terrible for your system because it bloats your stomach. And when your stomach bloats, your jeans just don't fit. You can drop one pant size simply by NOT drinking any carbonated drinks all together..Take away the bloat and you have instantly just made it one pant size lower. Besides, Sodas dehydrate you and with that One a Day Vitamin, you won't need the Caffeine in the soda and it will also cut out those extra calories that you don't need.
So remove that soda and the energy drinks and just think how much calories you just instantly removed from your daily intake. I normally consume what...four sodas and two energy drinks in one day...that is a total of .... 900 calories. Of what? Nothing...Those are horrible calories and calories that can be replaced by food which will fuel your body for your day and your workouts.

Your Body

Your body is like a computer. You must program your body to do what it is suppose to do so it won't crash and leave you with a virus. Your stomach is only the size of your fist. So think about it right now, Look at your hand and close your fist. Not very big is it. That is how much food you actually ONLY need to eat, each time you eat for every meal. If you eat anything more than that, you will stretch out your stomach which causes overeating and overweight.

What you need to do is eat every three hours, approx 5 to 7 times everyday around the same time. If you are always giving your body healthy and better food choices (the size of your fist) every three hours, your body will know you are giving it food. It will use that food properly. It will not go into starvation mode or store food away for later because it knows...it will get more in three hours. So what does your body do...it flushes everything out of your system because it doesn't need it.. Now it knows...you wont' forget about it and that food is on its way.

Walking Buddy

This is the best thing especially for woman. Get a walking buddy. One hour everyday. Just think about how much talking, venting and laughing two woman can do together while walking and yup, you guessed it...it just burns more calories and reduces your stress. You now are more relaxed because you can talk and free yourself of whatever is frustrating you while getting into shape.

Okay. Cut out eating in between meals.
Only eat healthy food and cut down on Carb’s like bread, potatoes, pasta's, rice, cereals, lollies etc. These are the fat making foods. Learn exactly what your food groups are so you then know what puts the weight on and off.
Don’t add salt to your meals. Cut out soft drinks.
Then walk an hour every morning two hours after a meal and the same in the afternoon.
If you can jog in between both sessions you'll burn even more calories.
You should lose and continue to lose more weight as you go.
If you can cut out your lunch meal and replace it with a protein drink instead that would also help. Available in supermarkets.
As long as you can stay off junk food and eating in between meals. If you have to eat something in between have something like small raw carrots or celery sticks.
Summary:
Choose a cereal low in sugar for breakfast.
Lunch can be a protein drink. Like “Slim Right”.
And all normal meals at a normal serve. Cut down on potatoes and only have small portions of these.
Walking as much as you can.

many will disagree on this or will find this difficult.. but it is very effective.. you need to skip your lunch! but you can have fruits or vegetables in the afternoon.. nevertheless u can have a nice yummy dinner..within a week you ll lose 5 kg!..i am sure about it.. try it but you need will power..

When I went vegetarian I gained a lot of weight around my upper abdminals. How do I get rid of it?Please help!

I went vegetarian a little over a year ago and I didn't do a very good job about eating the proper food. I was lacto ovo and ate a lot of dairy, which in retrospect, I know is wrong.
I later went vegan a little over 6 months ago and lost some of the weight I had gained. But I still have a lot of fat around my upper stomach. It's hard to explain, but it's like right under my rib cage is always bloated. I don't know how to get rid of it.
I've tried exercising and I'm going on a reduced calorie diet. I'm around 1400 right now. Now I'm going to eat nothing but vegetables and tofu. I have to commute to school every day so I get about 40 minutes of walking in plus climbing stairs at my apartment.
I really need ideas because I'm feeling terrible about myself and I honestly don't know what to do.

What's better for fat burning, running for 45 mins or fast walking for 45mins?

Going to start either one as many times as i can a week after work as i need to shed some unwanted lbs, im going to start some toning classes but want to lose some fat before i start toning. I weigh around 140lbs and im 5'6" i am now 14lb heavier than i was last year and im 23 feeling a little uncomfortable in my clothes! booo.

It rather depends on how much you weigh now, how overweight you are, how much less/different food you are eating, how much exercise you are taking, etc etc et. A 26-stone person is probably going to lose more weight than an 8-stone person, y'know?

You need to do a lot of exercise to accelerate your metabolism. It's better if you do cardiovascular exercise, because this kind of exercise helps you burn fat...

ONe of the very impt things in a detox programme is the water that we drink.

Whether drinking too much water will cause water retention or bloatedness depends on what sort of water you drink and what is your health condition.

Usually, people with weaker kidneys will suffer from water retention.. people who have high salt intake also suffer from that as well. But usually it is due to a lack of intake of water rather than taking too much water.

If you drink lots of tap water.. other than quenching thirst, it does not really benefit your health or your skin much.

Unless you drink good water which is clean and energized, then will it help you in your health and your skin.

Water retention and bloatedness will occur if the water you drink has large molecules. If you can drink water that has smaller molecules, you will be able to absorb better.

HELP...by going to the gym do you get a more well-defined face?

ppl tend to say that the more you go to gym and increase your muscle, the better face structure develops..i.e. your cheekbones become more visible..?
Answers: yes all the scrunching you do when lifting heavy weights and running really fast gives good definition. i reccomend tensing your face in your free time to get your face as buff as possible
I don't know about the part where you say "the better face structure develops". You can lose too much fat off your face and look gaunt... tanned but gaunt.

People who frequent the gym tend to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass. Unless you are already low in body fat, your face will have quite a bit of fat! If you reduce your body fat% you will lose some from your face and this has the effect of making your cheek bones more prominent.
i'm no expert but i think it really depends on how heavy and out of shape you are. a lot of heavy people tend to have more fat in their faces so i would think that working out regularly would slim your face down. but as long as you're also eating healthy and not excercising excessively (like five hours a day every day) you shouldn't end up like skeletor or anything. hope this helps!
