Diet Fitness Questions and Answers

Will I still be in starvation mode if I do not feel hungry and am exercising?

For example, at this moment I feel very full and I have only had a calorie intake of 450 calories (even though I suppose it is only 3:30 in the afternoon.) I am trying to lose weight in a healthy way and I don't want to go into starvation mode, however because I have a small appetite I feel satisfied with a small amount of calories. Would I be able to avoid starvation mode by exercising (today I walked briskly and jogged for 35mins)? Please help me, I am trying to burn fat not muscle and I have heard that starvation mode burns muscle.
Answers: Bear in mind that you normally have around 2000 calories worth of glycogen (broken down carbohydrate fuel) in your muscles and liver. You won't go into starvation mode and start cannibalizing muscle until you've used up most of that. 35 minutes of jogging won't put much of a dent in it.

To give you an idea, it takes me 2-2.5 hours of hard cycling to get to glycogen depletion.

Now, if you've been living on too few calories for several days, you may already be operating in "conservation" or "starvation" mode.
In order to not go into starvation mode and not store fat you must eat a minimum of 2000 calories per day with moderate exercise. Now you can eat small meals and snacks throughout the day to add up or if you need try a supplement protein shake.

What is the best and fastest way to lose 5 - 10 pounds. But not necessarily for it to stay off long term?

I want to lose 5 - 10 pounds in a very short time. But I dont need for it to stay off for that long, only for a few weeks is good enough.

Thanks
Answers: go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food after 7 p.m.
I know a woman who lost 60 pounds a month on it. She did nothing else!
Change your diet. Exercise.

Drink water instead of soft drinks.
Eat Fruits and vegetables.
Cut down on fatty foods and fast food and eat healthier foods,
carbs and proteins.

Of course, this is only friendly advice not a recomendation.
Whatever you do DO NOT GO ANOREXIC or anything. I believe you have common sense. You should drink plenty of water, eat nutritious food, like salad and fish. Never eat oily or fatty foods ever. Not even when you are not on a diet. Exercise more than usual. Walking cuts your pounds by a lot. Help around the house, and stay away from the couch. >.~ Good luck~

OK, *don't* use Alli, the side effects are miserable. We're talking uncontrollable diarohhea, cramps etc.

The best way to lose weight is to eat smaller portions, cut out fats and sugars (no fast food!) drink lots of water and get more exercise.
The first 5-10 pounds come off the quickest.
Walk at least 30 min a day, at a good pace. Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. Eat fresh fruits and veg instead of prepared snacks.
no junk food - duh, and stay away from anything that is bread or from the bread group: cereal, oatmeal, toast, rice, pasta/noodles, et cetera

u will lose about a pound a day. maybe more if u have a faster metabolism and/or u add exercising (at least 30 minutes a day)
It's hard for older men but i'm still teen. if i have to go to a wedding next and i have to look good for chikitas in the morning before work or school or errends stretch your legs bend down and touch your toes for ten seconds if you cant keep stretching untill you can touch you toes for at least a second(it took me a while before i can get to ten it burns like heck) after that do some pushups not a lot about 25 or so it tones your chest then crunches about fifty those are important if your trying to lose your gut.then take a shower and do your buisness that was your morning ....
before you go to sleep a good tree hours before play outside for about an hour basketball trapaline swimming jog at the park (i practice nunchukes) i'm a few punds over weight but doc says i'm healthy.
your play time depens on how much you eat not what you eat
the more you eat the more you play think of it like your car the more gas it has the farther it can go if you eat a lot sweat out the salts so they don't stay in your body. but if you have to day eat breakfast its okay to get seconds just stick make sure you eat it with juice(balance your vitamans and minerals zinc is real good it helps your immune system) and for lunch eat it with milk or water(i haven't drunk a soda in 2 or three years but i had a nestea from a soda machine cause they had no more water last summer) soda is really where you get most your impurities and they eat your teeth but yeah milk or water with lunch and it okay to snack but instead of a candy bar eat an apple or a banana or eat both shoot sometimes i cant even decide just eat a fruit and for dinner just have dinner with water then do you night exercise rinse off and sleep.

Is drinking to much milk bad i drink like half a gallon every day im 16 yrs old?

I heard too much calcium fuses your growth plates at a faster rate.
Answers: i think at your age right now its okay.
Humans aren't really made to drink milk past infancy. And we especially weren't made to drink cows milk at all.

benefits of milk are that it has a lot of nutrition which is good for you no matter how you slice it.

negatives of milk are that
it's high in fat and cholesterol if you're not drinking skim milk it's especially bad for you, skim milk is tolerable but a half gallon a day is still too much. Also it's difficult to digest over time hurting you digestive tract. Basically cardiovascular and potentially digestive health problems will develop if you continue to drink a half gallon a day for many years, especially if you're not drinking skim milk.

I'd suggest you switch to skim if you haven't already simply for health reasons. Actually I'd suggest you switch to soy milk if you really want to avoid health problems as skim milk still has a lot of the problems of regular milk. If you're unwilling to do that try to cut back your intake.

EDIT

Errr, I'm not calling you fat, I said there is a lot of fat and cholesterol in milk. Won't necessarily make you fat but it definitely isn't good for you. Don't believe me? Ask another question on here titled "are foods that are high in fat and cholesterol good for me?"
MILK IS ASWAM FOR CELCIUM AND STRENGTH BUT ITS ALSO FATTENING SO BECAREFULL, DONT DRINK TO MUCH.

Follow the following golden rules...
Start the day early....the day will end fantastically...
Early dinner and sleep early...
spend lesser hours at computers...
early getting up means...more time and so some breakfast.....agree ?
After "early dinner", have some fruits at bed time......or maybe fresh fruit jiuice..
Try to incorporate mor vegetables for lunch.....

When to Eat and How Often
This might sound strange, but you have to eat more often to lose fat and gain muscle. During my transition period, I never ate less than 6 meals a day.
• Try to eat every 2 to 3 hours.
• Do not eat complex carbohydrates after 6:00 p.m. or four to five hours before going to bed.
• Try to eat one gram of protein per pound of lean body mass on lifting days and .8 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass on non-lifting days.
• Never eat more than 70 grams of protein in one meal.
Carbohydrates
When I think of carbohydrates, I think of energy. Carbohydrates supply our bodies with the energy it needs to make it through a workout. Without an adequate supply of carbohydrates, the body goes into carbohydrate deprivation. This is called a state of ketosis (meaning our body is using protein as energy). This is not a good state to be in for long because it will rob the body of muscle tissue in an effort to create energy. On the other hand, if too many carbohydrates are consumed, they convert into stored fat. The idea is to consume just enough carbohydrates to make it through our workouts with sufficient energy. I have broken down carbohydrates into these three categories:
• Simple carbs: These are sugars, or quick energy. They are absorbed very quickly into the body. Ex. Anything with sugar, also fruit
• Complex carbs: This is where you get long-term energy for the day. These are long chained carbohydrates that brake down slower, giving us energy over a prolonged period of time. Ex. Oatmeal, potatoes, pasta, rice, breads
• Fibrous carbs: These are things like vegetables. I think of them as roughage in order to stay regular. Make sure you include them in you later meals when you can't eat complex carbs. They are also a good source of vitamins. Ex. Leafy vegetables like lettuce.
Protein
Proteins are the building blocks of our muscles. Without a sufficient amount of protein in our diet, our muscles will not have the raw materials that they need to build up, or even hang on to what is already there.
Net protein utilization: Not all protein is created equal. Different foods are absorbed more than others. For example, egg white protein is absorbed at 88%. That means we get about 9 eggs to our muscles. On the other hand, chicken breast are absorbed at 68%, meaning we get about 7 breasts to our muscles. It is imported to eat a wide verity of protein foods though; no one protein source has all the amino acids we need.
• Whey protein (100%): the best source of whey protein is from protein supplements. It is also absorbed very fast by the body, so it is best to take this when your body needs amino acids quickly: like right after a workout or when you first get up in the morning.
• Egg whites (88%)
• Fish (78%)
• Chicken breast (78%)
• Soy protein: My one bit of advice would be to try and stay away from soy protein. It is not absorbed very well by the body.
Fats
We normally think of fats as being bad. The fact is certain fats are essential to building muscle and carrying out various functions of the body. There are 2 fat types we need to be concerned about:
• Saturated fats: these are the bad fats. Avoid these fats as much as possible. You will find these types of fats mostly in meats
• Unsaturated fats: these are the good fats. They are a good energy source and help us build muscle. You can find from plant oils. Peanuts are also a good source.
Water
Do not under estimate the importance of water! If you are looking to get lean, water will be your best friend. Drink as much as you can and as often as you can. Also, it is very important to drink lots of water when you're eating large amounts of protein to clean urea from the system.
Vitamins & minerals
As resistance training athletes, we have a greater need for vitamins & minerals. When we workout and bring blood to our muscles it is important that our blood is full of those essential vitamins & minerals if we want to grow.
Supplements
Supplements are just that, meaning they are used to supplement your diet, not replace it. Don't ever think of it that way.
Hierarchy of supplements:
I developed this hierarchy of supplements based on what I thought were the most important and also by price.
• 1. Proper diet: Without proper diet you are just wasting money on supplements. Start here! Do not think that supplements are going to do it for you alone.
• 2. Multi-vitamin & mineral: It is very important to have all your vitamins & minerals when resistance training. Most of us are lacking in some areas, make it a priority to make this your first supplement.
• 3. Protein powder: It is usually very hard to get all the protein you need from real foods. Powders make it much easier. Also, these powders are absorbed fast by the body making them ideal after workouts or before and after sleep.
• 4. Creatine: This is great for harder workouts. It also makes you muscles hang on to water, giving them a better environment to grow.
• 5. L-glutamine: This is an important amino acid in muscle recovery
• 6. Branch chained amino acid: These are great before and after workouts along with L-glutamine because it gives your muscles all the amino acids it needs to repair and grow.
• 7. ZMA: This helps you release more growth hormone while you sleep, increasing your size and strength.
• 8. Thermogenic: These really help in the fat loss process. They also help you hang on to more muscle while dieting due to the fact you can eat more.
• 9. Meal replacement: Although very expensive, meal replacements make it much more convenient to get some of your meals in. Also, you can get in more meals than if you were to eat only real foods.
You should consult a doctor immediately.

My shoulder is bit bulky....rest of body is normal...how to reduce fat in dat area?

Answers: You can't really target one part of your body, like your shoulders, and expect that the fat will just fall away. Unfortunately, our bodies don't work like that. What you can do is: do exercises that work your shoulders, like swimming, pull-ups, lifting, push-ups, etc. Perhaps you should go to the gym and speak with a personal trainer about what would be best for you. Hope that helped and good luck!

Losing weight?

no matter what i do i cant lose weight im 5'3 and 105 and ive eaten 800 calories a month and i didnt gain or lose and im a swimmer, i swam since i was 6 but stopped a while and went back but i dont know why i cant lose weight
Answers: you probably consume hidden calories (in drinks and so on). Stop drinking soda and go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food after 7 p.m.
I know a woman who lost 60 pounds a month on it. She did nothing else!
Your BMI is 18.6 which is dangerously close to underweight if you're doing athletic activity like swimming you should be eating a lot more than 800 calories a day.

I personally would not reccommend you losing weight. If you still want to I'd reccommend asking a professional nutritionist what they think. After they tell you that they can't ethically help you to lose weight please seek counseling.
Eating anything in moderation will not make you fat. Try to eat leaner meat, cut down carbo intake, and have more vegetables in your diet. A great work out, perfect diet tips and self- discipline can help you gain the lean and slimmer you. Check out http://www.5TruthsAboutAbs.com for more tips.

Reduced Biceps Size?

Hi All . I Started going to Gym very recently . Some 20 days , only 4 days i worked out for my Biceps , and i was able to get a bulk (0.6" inch bigger ) .

But i didnt go since last 3 days and i lost that bulk :(

is that natural ?How long it takes to get permanent changes ?
Answers: yep ... thats real normal .. the thing with bicep size is that .. it depends with the weight you are lifting ... if u go for less weight more counts .. that would give you less mass but quick permanent changes ... if your going for heavy mass less counts .. that gives you more muscle .. but to make that mass stay you need more time ... generally it will take you around 6 months for some real good changes ( with the more weight less counts strategy ) .. but with more counts and less weights you can see some real nice shape definition within two to three months ( considering you ARE doing lots of counts ) . After that its refinement

And Terry C's answer also looks nice .... plus 35 years of workout experience - man thats amazing !!
should start seeing changes in about a month, the first time you measured was probably soon after you worked out and maybe not the second time. Also depends on what you're doing, you might have over trained the second time and if you're new to this don't start doing a bunch of the exercise you see them do in the magazines, for biceps stick to z-bar or strait bar curls and some dumbbell curls for a few months and no more than 8-10 total sets for biceps for now, same thing with triceps.Coop

Tips to increase my height please..?

I'm a 15-year-old girl, 5'2''(157cm), and weighing around 48 kg(i 'm not sure how to convert that into pounds)..i'm desparate to gain some height..my parents around 5'7'' and 5'0'' respectively, so i guess genetically this is all about how much i'll grow..i don't trust any supplements etc. that promote growth, since i'm too scared of affecting my growth hormone adversely!..i include lots of protein in my diet, including seafood and lentils and pulses, although i'm allergic to milk and try to make up for that by having a cup of yoghurt daily.are there any specific exercises(such as stretching exercises) that can help me grow taller?! Also, my legs are comparatively quite short, rather than my torso, so are there any specific exercises(i know i sound stupid, but i'm a bit clueless about all this, and like i said, desparate!)?
Answers: Hmmmmm

if your parents are 5.7" and 5.0" its likely that you gonna get few more inches .atleast till 5.8"

I was 4.75(35kg) when i was 15 and 5.2"(dont remember weight) when i was 17 . Now i am 5.9

My parents are 5.3 and 5.1"

For Bigger body frame make sure that you eat enough protiens .....

like egg whites , milk , etc etc ...for your weight make sure that you get atleast 50 grams of protiens everyday .... :)

one egg white = 3.5 g
100 ml milk = 3.2 g
one full egg = 6 - 7 g
yes
the shoes it might give you additional 10cm
and do not affect hormones
but now its bit early for that
i think 15 still a chance to grew taller,in this ask your mother this is inherited
48 kgms ,almost 96 pounds

two pounds 900 gms
do sum chin ups
tat shood help

Why do bodybuilders take supplements?

I am new in the bodybuilding field. I am an 18 year old male and i have been working out for 2 months now. I dont eat fast foods and most of my food is meat/salad/vegetables and juices .. nothing really out of order. The question i have is why do bodybuilders take supplements like Whey protien for example. Should i take these stuff? Thank you so much!
Answers: Many supplements will help, but the question is are they healthy? Realize that companys will make you think you need them so they can exist cause they are out their to make money... it's a business. I prefer not to use them and go the natural approach. Your gains may not be as fast as the other guy, but in the long run natural is better. Good Luck!
My field is in fashion, as a result many people ask me how they can slim down. My answer is always the same: good diet and exercise. But I found this great product which I think helps a lot in the process. I recommend you check this website
http://www.diet-easy-now.us , they have a free trial and you only pay $6.95 shipping and handling. Good luck!

Am I normal for my age?

I was just wondering if I get enough exercise. What I do is, I play handball everyday. The handball where I go against my friends to hit the ball against the wall with our arms not just our hands, we use a medium sized ball, not those tiny ones. It includes running to hit the ball. I just joined MarathonKids. MarathonKids is when kids gotta run 26 miles under 6 months. I have to run a mile every Friday. Most of the time, i go with my grandma to the park to walk to keep her blood pressure low. Also, when I am not playing handball at school, I play basketball and always race against my friends around the track. I have asthma but never had an attack. I dont usually get tired as quickly. My doc says I might grow out of asthma. Should I always run though?

I am 10, I am about 5'7" tall. But I still weigh 86 pounds. Am I ok? Oh, and do I have big feet? I can fit into a 6, 7, and 7 1/2 women, but 7 1/2 is kinda big.My shoe I go to school is 7 1/2 I gota tie it pretty tight. I had my period 2
Answers: It's kinda hard to believe that your 5'7 and 86 pounds. I mean your ok if that is how your body is built, but I'd aim to put on some fat.
You are normal.
although very self concious but physically normal
yes you're normal.

generally, if you feel good, you're okay
do you feel good in your skin?
WOW! For a 10 yr old your very tall! Haha nice. You should just right don't worry. I am 15 and am 108 which is awful cuz I was made short haha. You fine! No worries!
Shoe size is soooo normal!
at 5'7 and 86 lbs? i think thats normal. and everything else. i wear like size 8? lol idk but i think i might be shorter than 5'7 and im 13. maybe, maybe not havent cheked my height much lol. but i weigh more than 86 lbs.
We are all different. Do not worry about not being average. Normal is very hard to define. I would listen to your doctor and enjoy being who you are.
the excersise is perfect. dont stop it. it sounds like u will grow out of asthma. go girl. im a little older and i wear a 4 1/2 or 5. but my cousin whoses around ur age wears those sizes too. i think i weirdit seems lke i have to small of feet. well i think ur normal.
Gee Jackie, it sounds like you get more exercise than the average pre-teen your age. (I am in my mid-20s and like to run, walk and swim as well as ride a bike occasionally). That is good, it does your body well. No, your feet aren't too big for you size (5'7"), you will probably grow into them as you age and a 6, 7 and even 7.5 is NOT a big foot, more average from my understanding. Don't be in a hurry to put on pounds, you're only 10 and they will come later, believe me. Keep exercising and eating well despite your asthma, it can only help you. Make sure to get adequate rest. I am sure that your grandma appreciates your company as well.
5'7" should weigh significantly more than 86 lbs .
With that low of body weight for the height ,
I would be concerned about frail bones and organ malfunctions .
Try and get some more nutrition in you .

Best of Luck

What will happen to the muscle mass if a bodybuilder stops training for a long time like a year or more?

will the muscle mass stay relatively the same, will it decrease in size dramatically ?
Answers: Sure it will decrease in size, and get flabby, Snuffy is right, it will not turn to fat, it's impossible, fat and muscle are different tissues that don't mix.
The muscle tone goes away. It does not turn into fat.

Metabolism?

how can a get a higher metabolism?? exercises? foods?
Answers: Eating breakfast, exercise, eating hot and spicy foods, drinking green tea, etc.
hey you could try..

green tea
or
wheat bran cerial
or
excersicing as soon as you wake up and eating healthy :)

good luck xo
green tea helps in the long run

spicy foods are said to increase ur metabolism a small percentage for a short amount of time - an hour or two?

exercise is the key. running especially helps - but if u dont usually run start with walking or fast walking. any exercise will help. also building muscle mass. more muscle = fast metabolism. combine walking with some weight lifting/ or exercises like crunches and push ups will definatly increase ur metabolism. 30 minutes a day will do it. (u can divide this up into 3 parts and do 10 minutes at a time)
A high fiber diet will boost metabolism. Research thyroid diets.
